Experiencing A Painful Spiritual Awakening? It May Be Kundalini!
On a spiritual path you may go through different spiritual awakenings during your life. Some will feel like pure bliss, others you may wish to undo because they do not feel as great as you anticipated. The one I most commonly hear about are struggles with is a kundalini awakening—particularly one that was unplanned.
Some people choose to open up their kundalini energy on purpose when they feel ready, but for many it happens unexpectedly and often without any warning.
The sentence I hear the most from those who recently started their kundalini awakening is: “I felt like I was dying.”
It is true, a Kundalini awakening can be harsh on the physical body especially when it was not ready for an awakening. There are many symptoms that can come up, some common, but some are unique to each individual.
The important thing to remember is that you are not alone. Many people go through the Kundalini awakening and what you feel has spiritual not physical roots. Every symptom means that the body is taking its time adjusting to the energy, an you must be patient. (There are also ways to speed up and improve this process).
In the end, a Kundalini awakening is a beautiful spiritual gift that is giving you an energetic upgrade from the universe. When the energy quiets down, you will be able to use it to advance your spiritual abilities and grow exponentially on your spiritual path.
What Is Kundalini Energy?
Kundalini energy is a creative, powerful life force energy that exist inside every single person, but it often lies dormant. It is symbolized by the snake and it sleeps at the base of your spine. When it wakes up, the most common symptom is feeling vibrating energy going up and down your spine. It is not a physical energy that can be measured by mainstream science (at least not yet), but a type of spiritual energy that exists in the subtle body.
When awakened, the Kundalini energy goes up and down the spine, often felt more intensely during mediation, yoga, or energy work. If it was awakened during a dedicated Kundalini yoga practice, this awakening can feel like pure bliss. This awakening is the start of moving away from the ego and into universal loving energy. It is a journey of self-realization as a soul and pure being of light.
However, it can also awaken as a result of trauma, incorrect use of drugs, or a strong intimate experience with another person whom has already went through their awakening. In all of these circumstances the awakening process itself can feel rushed and dramatic.
Kundalini energy purifies the whole body so that it can elevate in vibration to higher and higher levels. This is the main reason why it can be physically and emotionally painful. Some people even describe some of its symptoms as dying, but the only thing that can die from this experience is you ego. You will be just fine, even though it may not feel like it in the beginning. In fact, when the kundalini awakening is complete, you will be a stronger person with the possibility of new spiritual gifts.
Symptoms of A Kundalini Awakening
There are many symptoms of kundalini awakening, but the main one is feeling a sense of vibration that can be anywhere from the bottom to the top of your spine and head, as the energy travels from the crown chakra. This will likely feel like nothing you have ever felt before. While the energy is traveling, it is awakening all of the energetic points, and clearing out anything negative. This is why secondary symptoms can be very different depending on where you need to be healed.
They are not caused by a kundalini awakening, as it is very light energy. However, when the body and mind are not fully ready fo it, which happens in most cases of spontaneous Kundalini awakening.

- How To Make Your Awakening Easier
The practice that is most connected to Kundalini energy is Kundalini yoga. If you think you are going through a Kundalini awakening, going to Kundalini yoga practices will help move the energy along and not get stuck in energetic blocks thus relieving any negative symptoms and speeding up the completion of the awakening process.
Besides Kundalini yoga, when you are having intense body sensations, it is recommended to meditate twice every day and consciously ask the energy to move through you and clear out any blocks.
While the clearing process continues, your body will start reacting differently to food. You may end up changing your whole diet. Try the elimination diet by eating just one thing at a time, and adding new foods slowly and monitoring how your body reacts to every one of them. Eventually, you will end up with a personalized list of foods that serve and do not serve your body. You may also go to an Ayurvedic practitioner to help you with this task.
Finally, be patient with yourself and your body. Hold no expectation about how each day will go, as you can feel very different on a day to day basis and have emotional swings as well. Trust that the body is doing exactly what it needs to do. Trust the process.
Can I Trigger My Kundalini Awakening?
You absolutely do not want to force it. It should happen naturally when the body, mind, and soul is ready. Some spiritual leaders do use Kundalini yoga to invite the awakening in, and in this cases it’s a more gentle process.
Doing Kundalini yoga is beneficial for anyone and if it helps your awakening, that is fantastic, but Kundalini awakening is not the easiest of awakenings, and not something to try to trigger when you may not be ready. If you are, the sleeping Kundalini energy will awaken by itself.
