Candle Gazing Meditation: Open Up Your Third Eye and Gain More Focus
There are many ways to meditate, and the following method is best for when you need to open your third eye and/or tune-up psychic abilities and to work on focus and concentration. It can also be a great meditation for those who want to meditate with their eyes open. This meditation is called the candle-gazing meditation, which is a type of Trataka meditation—staring at a small object without blinking.
Choosing a Candle
It is best to buy a beeswax candle, so it is free of any toxins. Beeswax will also burn longer than most paraffins.
You can choose a color of the candle for this candle-gazing meditation to reflect an additional intention behind your meditation. Are you working on your financial abundance, relationship, career, or anything else in your life? You can choose candles that have the color representative of that subject metaphysically. It also works if you are wanting to open up a specific chakra. Just be sure to choose the appropriate color.
Each color has meaning associated with it, they are:
- White for clarity
- Red for courage and safety, root chakra
- Orange for happiness, sexuality, creativity, sacral chakra
- Yellow for self-esteem, willpower, solar plexus chakra
- Green for healing, hope, heart chakra
- Blue for communication, self-expression, relaxation, throat chakra
- Indigo for intuition, wisdom, clarity, third eye chakra
- Violet for spiritual development and connection, crown chakra
- Pink for love
- Silver for subconscious mind access and personal transformation
- Gold for prosperity and abundance
How to do the Candle-Gazing Meditation
After choosing the candle you want to work with, you want to find a quiet, dim, and safe place where you will not have any distractions. Make sure you feel comfortable from the clothing you wear to the temperature in the room. Find a comfortable sitting position and place the candle in front of you at eye level about two feet away. It can be placed on a table or a stand. Light the candle.
Close your eyes for just a minute to ground and center yourself, and take a few deep breaths.
Open your eyes and put all of your attention on the flame of the candle. Do not blink or look away. If your eyes start to water, don’t worry it will pass. If you do need to look away, close your eyes instead, then open again and continue.
Breathe slowly as you gaze softly at the flame. Remain aware of your thoughts but do not dwell on them, and let each pass swiftly. You may choose to visualize the candle’s light as the pure light of love burning away any negativity from your life.
Keep your attention only on the flame until you feel like the candle-gazing meditation is complete—10 to 15 minutes is a good duration for this meditation. Then slowly change your focus to notice the room you are in and take a few deep clearing space to re-ground yourself into reality.
